Mao in Power
On Wednesday we will be talking about Mao's rule in China. Although many in China still revere him, he left China in chaos and devastation. On Wednesday we are going to learn about his rule using stations. Up above is a scene from the movie The Last Emperor. It illustrates what living in China was like during The Cultural Revolution.
Below are the stations and the beginning lecture discussing Mao and his regime.

Station 2: Google Expedition: Beijing
Station 3: Propaganda Used by Mao and His Regime

Footbinding: The Price of Beauty
What is the price of beauty? Women continually struggle with body image and standards of beauty that are hard to reach. Unfortunately this is a tale as old as time. For years women in China would bind their feet in order to obtain the "golden lotuses" that were so desirable. This was a dangerous beauty trend that resulted in female subjugation (action of bringing something or someone under control), pain, and in some cases death. Listen to the story above and learn about this Chinese ritual. Reflect on our own beauty rituals and practices as well, and ask yourself what beauty really is?

Chinese New Year
Tomorrow we are getting ready to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Check out the video above that tells the tale. The video is super cool because the characters for each animal are represented in the animal itself. Remember that written Chinese represents characters or things. It is not a phonetic alphabet like ours.

Second Semester: China
We are now embarking on second semester. I absolutely love each and every unit. We get to start with China. Chinese history is vast and fascinating. I was lucky enough to visit Beijing a few years ago and would love to go again. I visited many historic places and got to walk on the Great Wall. You will soon learn its history and the emperor behind its creation.
